‘MOTIVATION, ENGAG EMENT & YOUR ROLE IN CUSTOMER CARE’ Illona McLay, Dental Business and Selling Skills Coach, travelled to the north of Scotland to present a full day team session at the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel, Aberdeen. This was a joint HDP and ICP course and attracted 17 delegates from 3 practices.
‘would recommend to any dental practice; exceptionally insightful, informative and enjoyable’
The responses to this event were all extremely positive and many delegates left with a clear idea on things they would change or implement as a result of what they learned on the course.

HDP has a varied programme of events lined up starting with a core CPD topic on 11th November. Elizabeth Connor from Dundee Dental Hospital & School talked about ‘Keeping up to date with IRMER and the GDC’. As a core CPD topic this presentation attracted a good turnout of dentists and staff members alike.
The following week, Lucy Griffin, Head of Medical Illustration at Raigmore Hospital guided delegates through the technicalities of taking good intra-oral dental photographs. In addition to her lecture presentation there was a handson practical session when delegates were encouraged to use one another as ‘models’ for practice in setting up the necessary equipment to ensure good, clear dental photographs.
In the new year, Illona McLay (see page 16) returns to Inverness to present a similar event to the one held in Aberdeen in August. Although this course is already fully booked, we will maintain a waiting list for any cancellations. If there is sufficient further interest we may look into the options for running the course again.
There are two events in February, the first of which is an afternoon course at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on 3rd February. Dr Alexander Crighton (opposite page, top left) will present ‘Drugs in Dentistry’, covering the common medicines used in the community that impact on dental care as well as reviewing issues with the newer medicines such as the anticoagulants, the anti-resorptive medicines causing MRONJ and the new biologic agents for immunotherapy. This event is open to all who are interested in this important topic.
The following week on the 7th February, Aubrey Craig from the MDDUS will host an evening seminar on ‘Law and Ethics in Dentistry’. This lecture based, informal presentation will address the ethical and legal responsibilities of all dental registrants. He will use MDDUS case examples to illustrate learning points and assist with risk management of patients.
‘Medical Emergencies for the Dental team’ returns on 7th March, this time to the Kingsmills Hotel. Ian and Liz will present two half day courses which are a blend of lecture, workshop and hands on. Open to all the dental team, this course is popular with many practices having attended more than once in the four years that we have run this event. The afternoon session is already fully booked but places remain for the morning.
Our final event on June 16th sees Brian Millar (above right) return to Inverness to hold a full day event on ‘Cleverly Creative Composites’. This course will be a mix of seminar and hands on covering composite selection, placement, finishing and polishing and includes matrix systems, instruments and techniques for large and small restorations on anterior and posterior teeth.
Brian is a very highly trained educator and clinician and is always a popular speaker. It is always helpful to receive member’s views on which CPD topics interest them so please let us know what you would like to see included in further sessions either for dentist or team members.
