So here we are with the first magazine ‘post Brexit’ and without getting embroiled in a ‘heated debate’ on the topic following the UK populations decision on 23rd June; it will without doubt create further comment and opinion as the terms to leave the EU become demonstrably more apparent and we begin to understand what the potential impact on the dental industry and marketplace might be.
Politics aside (thankfully) there has been plenty of news to bring members since the summer edition of HDP Focus, and where better to start than the Highland Dental Show which once again was hosted at the Kingsmills Hotel in September.
Once more co-sponsored by HDP and our preferred partner Wrights, the event provided an opportunity for the industry in the north of Scotland to gather and spend quality time with leading suppliers in dentistry materials, equipment and hygiene products, along with companies providing business support and advice such as finance, accountancy and legal services.
As ever when choosing Kingsmills Hotel as a venue, the event was extremely well organised with both delegates and exhibitors fully catered for, and I must add my personal thanks to those staff at HDP HQ who were involved in supporting the event before, during and afterwards.
There were more exhibitors than the inaugural show in 2014 and in fact demand for attendance outstripped display stand space availability, which was especially pleasing; however delegate numbers were reduced this time around which was disappointing taking into account the extensive promotion and publicity for the show beforehand.
However the feedback obtained from both exhibitors and delegates following the show confirmed there is certainly an appetite for this type of informal event in the future, although it is likely we may have to consider a few changes in the existing format to ensure a successful and worthwhile outcome for delegates, exhibitors and sponsors alike.
On behalf of HDP I wish to express my thanks to Wrights for their continued sponsorship, to suppliers and companies involved on the day for making the effort to travel to Inverness and support the show, and of course to those delegates who took time out to attend and spend the afternoon talking dentistry with exhibitors.
Talking of great events, I attended the full day presentation from renowned business coach Illona McLay in August (sponsored by HDP), which focused on the topics of “motivation, patient engagement and developing excellent customer service”, and it certainly created lots of discussion on the day, and provided all 17 delegates with plenty of ‘food for thought’ on what could be changed, improved, developed, upon return to the surgery.
Illona works primarily in the dental industry and is just as happy working with large or small groups, individual practices, principal partners, etc., so if you think you could benefit from Illona’s services, check out page 20 for greater insight into the days’ proceedings or to obtain Illona’s contact details.
I’m sure by now, HDP members and practice staff alike are all now fully aware that back in April we launched the ‘new look’ HDP website, and I’m delighted to advise that since its launch it is evident from reviewing the statistics (yes someone has to do it!) that visitors are pleased with what they see, as demonstrated by the fact that website ‘traffic’ is spending more time on the website and viewing more content/pages than previously. There is however a ‘hidden gem’ contained within the new HDP website (which is exclusively available to members and designated practice staff only) that appears to have been overlooked and so far ‘flown under the radar’!!!!!!!! This ‘hidden gem’ is in fact the ‘Information Vault’ which contains a host of useful information, documents, guidelines and advice to help run your practice. You may (or may not) have noticed the flyer insert in October monthly schedules which not only reminded members about the ‘Information Vault’, but also to highlight the recent addition of three more specific categories that will help you with the following, namely:
• Recruitment of plan patients
• Marketing your dental practice
• Practice management
